Beloved husband, father and grandfather, JOHNNY MITCHELL, left us this Wednesday, September 11, in the year of our Lord, 1996. We encourage you to not only mourn his death, but also rejoice his life and the lives he touched and helped along the way. Johnny was born in Galveston, Texas, on October 28, 1913, the son of Greek immigrants, Katina and Mike Mitchell. Johnny Mitchell is from a generation of independent oilmen who were unafraid of hard work, sacrifice, and knew the true value of independence. He began his career during the pre-war years in Vinton, Louisiana. He moved to Houston in 1948, soon to become president of Oil & Gas Investments, Inc., CEO of Westworld, Inc., Westworld Oil & Gas Corp., and a major stockholder of Mitchell Energy and Development Corp.

Aside from his significant achievements in oil and gas production, Johnny was best known for his many activities in various petroleum associations, and community and humanitarian projects. He was an outspoken past-president of Texas Independent Producers and Royalty Owners Association. A fervent worker on behalf of the underprivileged, both young and old, he served as a member of the Board of Directors of the Boys Club of Galveston, Executive Board of Houston's Metrpolitan Board of Y.M.C.A., a member of the National Board of The American Medical Center - Denver, Colorado, American Mental Health Foundation, the Edna Gladney Foundation, CEO of Liberty of Muscular Dystrophy Foundation, Variety Boys Club, National Board of Boys Clubs of America, The Society for Prevention of Blindness and various other charitable organizations.

Johnny was a graduate of Texas A & M University. He served in the US Army attaining the rank of Major during World War II, attached to George S. Patton's Third Army. Johnny received five Battle Stars, the Bronze Star and the Oak Leaf Cluster.

He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Alleyne Pine Mitchell; daughter, Mary Ann Hallbeck and son-in-law, Vernon; daughter, Patricia Mitchell; son Johnny Mitchell, Jr., six grandchildren and three great grandchildren; sister, Maria Ballantyne and husband, Dr. A. J. Ballantyne; brother, George P. Mitchell and wife, Cynthia, and a number of nieces and nephews.
