He was the son of Henry Knox Adams and Marguerite Prentiss Adams.
On September 9, 1950 as James Dana Adams, he married Rosa Irene Martin at Herndon Craig, Virginia.
They were the parents of two children.

Survivors included his wife of 56 years, Irene M. Adams; two sons and a daughter-in-law, James Dana Adams Jr. and William M. "Bill" and Ann Adams; nieces and nephews. Graveside services with full military honors conducted Wednesday, September 27, 2007.
