An avid politician, Harvey was elected Lieutenant Governor of Kansas before his thirtieth birthday, 1897-1899.
In 1918 he wrote several articles and a book, "Tales and Trails of Wakarusa," in which he recounted his boyhood days along the river. (One can read this book on the internet.) He and his wife were instrumental in helping establish Capitol Post #1 of the American Legion in Topeka. Harvey was Kansas State Chess Champion three times.
Alex married Isabella Cone and they had three sons, Randal, Paul and Alex Jr. Randal and Paul each married and had children.
Alex Jr. became a Catholic priest and later a monsignor in the Kansas City Diocese. He dedicated the new St. Joseph Church in Leavenworth on May 31, 1964. It replaced the old, magnificent cathedral that was destroyed by fire in 1961. Msgr. Harvey died in 1971.
