He married E. Maxine Busch in Chillicothe, Missouri. Leland was a lifelong farmer. He was a paratrooper for the United States Army's 82nd Airborne Division from 1943 to 1946, serving during World War II. He was a member of the Orient Methodist Church and former commander of the Creston V.F.W. and Williamson American Legion.
He enjoyed spending time with family and friends. He was an avid bowler, golfer and card player. Over the years, he won numerous awards competing in tractor pull competitions. He was a proud volunteer member of the Adams County Sheriff's Posse.
He is survived by his wife, Maxine; son, Larry (Cathy) Swanger; 2 daughters, Connie Arey (Larry Reisinger), and Jerilyn (Al) Schneider; sister-in-law, Helen Swanger; brother-in-law, Doug Busch; 6 grandchildren; 6 great-grandchildren; and 1 great-great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by his parents; 2 brothers, Lester and Gerald Swanger; and a sister-in-law, Ethel Swanger.
