HEBRON -- Carroll Denis Matthews, 76, of Groton Road, died Sept. 29, 2008, at Speare Memorial Hospital, Plymouth, after a period of declining health.

He was born in Bristol, to Carroll G. "Tuck" and Ileene (Adams) Matthews. He was a lifelong resident of Hebron and Groton.

He graduated from Bristol High School, attended New Hampton School and completed his education at Plymouth State College.

He worked for years as a dye maker at Esty Tool & Die in Bristol. He served 15 years as a selectman in Groton, was a member of Newfound Area School Board, and a deputy fire warden for Grafton County.

He enjoyed the outdoors, and was a charter member of Hardy Country Snowmobile Club, and an avid hunter and fisherman.

He was predeceased by his wife, Verna (Corbeil) Matthews, in 1999.

Family members include his wife, Dawn (Campbell) Matthews of Hebron; three sons, Joseph "Jay" Matthews, Alan Matthews, and Gordon Matthews, all of Hebron; two stepdaughters, Catherine Feener of Sprucehead, Maine, and Cynthia Oliver of Wayland, Mass; six grandchildren; nine stepgrandchildren; two great-grandchildren.

SERVICES: Calling hours will be Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Emmons Funeral Home, 115 South Main St., Bristol. A memorial service will be held Friday at 2 p.m. at Union Congregational Church of Hebron. The Revs. John Fischer and Judith Gooch will co-officiate. Interment will be private, at the convenience of the family.
