Joseph was born Giuseppe Lorenzo Montano on August 10, 1900 in San Fele, Italy. As a small child, he immigrated with his mother, brother, and sister to join his father and two older brothers in New York City. As a young man, he worked at Shooters Island Shipyard on Staten Island for the Standard Ship Building Company. He started as a ship fitter's helper and then became a shipping clerk/packer. On October 5, 1922, he was with two friends in Harlem when he was shot by an unknown person or persons. He passed away the next morning at Harlem Hospital at age 22.
