Above the embedded stone is a metal plaque that reads:

This old stone marked the grave of
John Abbett, son of town's founder.
Since 1763 in a fence row at the
Upper end of town at a site
128 feet east of Abbott St.
35 feet south of Water St.
moved to this place in 1976
to make way for a parking lot

Gravesite Details
Although confirmation has not been made, local urban legend holds that the rope loop at the bottom of the stone and animal at the top of the stone means that John Abbett was hanged as a horse thief.
