Mr. William Fredrick Penland, 85, of Morganton, N.C. passed away, Thursday, Oct. 2, 2008, while at Grace Hospital.

He was born Dec. 27, 1922, in Burke County, a son of the late Fred Penland and Julia Bessie Rudisill Penland.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Penland was also preceded in death by a brother, Jim Penland; and a granddaughter, Gina Pritchard.

Mr. Penland was a member of the Morganton First Baptist Church. He was also a World War II Veteran, having served in the US Army and a former member of the Loyal Order of the Moose. Mr. Penland retired from Drexel Furniture after 40 plus years service as Office Manager.

The Penland family would like to extend a special thanks to the staff of Burke Hospice and Palliative Care and Brenda Brown and neighbors for their kind and compassionate care given Mr. Penland during his illness. Words cannot express the gratitude the family has for the love and kindness shown by their special friend, Vickie Burleson.

Mr. Penland is survived by his wife, Bessie Jones Penland, of the home; a son, Steve Penland, of Morganton; Judy Pritchard and husband, Jerry, of Marion; Mary Martin, of Charlotte; a granddaughter, Melody Pritchard; and several nieces and nephews.

Interment will follow at the Forest Hill Cemetery with Military Honors provided by the American Legion Post 234, Valdese.
