Son of Burwell Jefferson and Elizabeth Andrews (Malone) Briggs of Harrison County, TX. Brother of John Wesley and Robert W.

Thomas died during the Civil War of disease, and was taken by boat up the Cumberland River to the Clarksville Female Academy which was used as a Confederate hospital in 1861 and 1862. Three hundred and seven [307] Confederate soldiers died there and were buried in a mass grave behind the hospital.
The City of Clarksville built a bridge over the graves in 2001. The bridge is designated The Confederate Soldiers Memorial Bridge.
