When Brearley had about 100 volunteers, he led the Marshall County company into Peoria where they went into camp at Camp Lyon, near present day Glen Oak Park. On August 27, 1862, Brearley and 88 of his volunteers, including now Private William H. Thompson, were mustered into service as Co. B of the 86th Regiment of Illinois Volunteer Infantry. Brearley was elected Captain of Co. B.
On September 7, 1862, the men of the 86th Illinois marched out the gates of Camp Lyon, through the streets of Peoria, with much fanfare, and boarded a train bound for Camp Joe Holt, Jeffersonville, Indiana. Three weeks later, the men of the 86th were in the field in Kentucky as part of Col. Daniel McCook's Brigade, in pursuit of Confederate troops. On Oct. 8, 1862, the men of McCook's Brigade were engaged with those troops in the Battle of Perryville, Kentucky, the 86th Illinois suffering their first casualties. There would be many more to come. After the Battle of Perryville, the Confederate troops withdrew from Kentucky and the men of McCook's Brigade marched on to Nashville, Tennessee where they would go into winter camp.
Life during that first winter in the field in the Nashville area was hard on the new troops, the lifestyle, diet and living conditions were not conducive to good health. The Nashville National Cemetery is the final resting place of hundreds of Union soldiers who died during that first winter in Nashville. Hundreds more were sent home with the hope that with the help of family and some home cooking that they could survive their ailment.
Conditions did not improve a lot in the spring and summer of 1863 for the troops stationed in the Nashville area. Diet and long hot marches continued to take their toll on the troops. Whether, now, 37 year old Private William H. Thompson was one of these having difficulty with his health or whether he was injured in some way during the summer of 1863, it is known that in August of 1863, doctors made the decision that it would be best to discharge Private Thompson from the service and send him home. So on August 4, 1863, after serving his country in uniform for nearly a year, Private William H. Thompson was discharged from the service for disability and he was sent home.
Whatever his ailment or injury, Private William H. Thompson made it home and survived. At the time of the 1870 census, the Thompsons are found in Marshall County, Illinois;
William H Thompson M 42 Illinois
Martha Thompson F 37 Ohio
James Thompson M 16 Illinois

On March 10, 1875, Private William H. Thompson died and his mortal remains were laid in the Sugar Grove Cemetery north and west of Henry, Illinois. The Henry Republican edition of March 11, 1875 had the following notice of his passing;
"Died in Whitefield, March 10, of consumption, William H. Thompson, aged 47 years."

This left Martha J. Thompson with at least eight children between the ages of 21 and 6.

In May of 1876, it appears that Martha J. Thompson was married to Sampson Rowe. The following was found in "The Henry Republican" newspaper issue of June 1, 1876;
"Marriage licenses for May, issued by County Clerk, J. c. Kingsley, Esq.
Sampson Rowe of Henry and Martha J. Thompson of Whitefield."

Less than three years after they were married, Sampson Rowe died at the age of 63 of pneumonia on December 15, 1878. This was found in the Lacon Journal edition of January 16, 1879 where we found the Vital Statistics of those who have died recently;
Lawn Ridge, Dec. 20, Evelyn McVicker, aged 63 years

At the time of the 1880 census, Martha J. (__________) Thompson Rowe is found in Whitefield, Marshall County, Illinois. She is listed as Widowed and Keeping House;

At the time of the 1900 census, they are all found in Lincoln Township, Oklahoma County, Oklahoma Territory, where the family is farming. Joseph and Anna are listed as having been married for 20 years. Martha is using her Thompson name, the one Anna would have been born under. Martha is listed as having had 9 children, all of whom are living;
