Gresham was born 14 August 1818, in Denison, Grayson County, TX, the middle of three children of Walter D. and Nan Gresham Melson. After serving in North Africa and Europe with the 36th Infantry Division and Darby's Rangers (1st Ranger Bn) in WW-II, he remained in the Army and served in Italy, Turkey and Japan, as well as at various posts in the United States, until his medical retirement in 1966. He died in the station hospital at Ft. Ord, Monterey County, CA, of complications due to untreatable lung cancer.

He married Helen Marie Rice at Durant, Oklahoma, on 30 Sep 1939 and had one child, a son, Robert, with her. Helen died of complications of Alzheimer's Disease, on 9 May 2001, and is buried with Gresham in the same grave.
