Shipwreck survivor. Hilda Batten was a baby travelling on the steamer SS Ethie on Dec. 10, 1919 when it ran aground during one of the worst blizzards ever recorded off the west coast of Newfoundland. Her mother wrapped Hilda in blankets and placed her into a mailbag to be sent down a line over the open sea to safety. All of the other passengers and crew were eventually rescued. Hilda later became a teacher in St. John's and married Rev. Clayton Menchions.
