James, who went by Jim throughout his life, was the son of Doctor Patrick O'Neal and Martha Jane Carter. On December 23, 1906 in Macon County, Tennessee, Jim married Floretta Florence Cliburn, daughter of Thomas Henry Cliburn and Sarah Elizabeth McGuffey. Jim and Florence had fifteen children together.

Portland, Tenn.- Services for James I. O'Neal, 81, retired sawmill operator, will be at 1 p.m. today at Wilkinson and Wiseman Funeral Home.
Burial will be in the Macedonia Cemetery in Allen County, Ky.
O'Neal, a resident of Portland, died Thursday in Highland Hospital.
Survivors include six daughters, Mrs. Bob Eaton, Franklin, Ky., Mrs. Ammon Richards, Mrs. Raymond Russell and Mrs. Tommy Tucker, Portland, Mrs. E. W. Marlin, Nashville, and Mrs. Donald Cook, Indianapolis; five sons, Willard, Portland, Thomas, Indianapolis, Garlin, Lawrence, Mich.; Lawrence, Plant City, Fl., and and Willie O'Neal, Stockton, Calif.; 52 grandchildren and 35 great grandchildren.
