Borgan Electrocuted

Johnny Bales, 24, of 402 N. Harvey, Apartment 11, was electrocuted about 8:50 p.m. Thursday after he reportedly cut a ground wire on a power pole and it fell against a hot line carrying 13,000 volts.

According to reports, Bales and 22-year-old Butch Thompson, of 210 1/2 West Adams, had been collecting wire from an old junk yard behind Sunset Heights, Phillips.

Thompson said Bales asked him to stop the pickup in which they were riding at the power pole, about one-half mile northwest of Sunset Heights. Bales then reportedly cut the ground line with a hatchet, started winding the wire around the hatchet handle and jerked on it to free it from the static line to which it was connected at the top.

The static line was not a hot wire, according to reports, but the ground line apparently fell against the hot line carrying the 13,000 volts.

Thompson said Bales' clothing caught fire. He said he used a rock to knock the wire loose from Bales' hand and extinguished his burning clothing.

Thompson said he tried chest massage and artificial respiration i an effort to revive Bales, but was unsuccessful. He placed him in the pickup and drove him to North Plains Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival at 9:05 p.m.

According to reports, Bales was burned badly by the electrical voltage and apparently knocked from his shoes by the shock.

Bales was employed by B&B Well Service, Inc., where Thompson also works.

Survivors are his wife, Audrey, and a daughter, Kelly Ann, both of the home; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Bonnie Bales of Borger; two brothers, Freddie of Borger and Jack of Garland; two sisters, Mrs. Ramona Anderson and Mrs. Norma Hale, both of Garland; his grandfather, John C. Bales of Borger, and grandmother, Mrs. May Hammonds of Borger.

Funeral arrangements are pending with Ed Brown and Sons.
