The son of John & Sarah (Lambert) Diem, he married Catherine lnu., but children, if any, are unknown. In 1860, he was a farm laborer living in Gap, Salisbury Township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Lancaster July 4, 1863, mustered into state service at Harrisburg July 9 as a private with Co. F, 47th Pennsylvania Militia, and honorably discharged with his company August 13, 1863. The regiment was one of many emergency units mustered during the Gettysburg crisis, but they saw no action.
