Gray was educated in New York and went on to study construction and management of illuminating gasworks. In 1873 Gray relocated to St. Louis working in gas and water companies and eventually building works in Kansas, Texas, Colorado, Missouri and Indiana. 1883 found Gray living in Chicago and working as a gas and hydraulic engineer. During his seventeen year career he constructed nine water works and eleven gas works. Gray was married to the former Emma Wilton (b. 1842; d. 1924), of Kent, England. Emma is interred with her husband's ashes, resided at 1708 McCadden Place in Hollywood with her daughter Harriet.
