Son of Olen Reed Nutter and Iva Ella Troxel.

Glen Lindsay Nutter, 88, of Thedford, Neb., prominent Sandhills rancher and rodeo champion died on Nov. 13, 2007.

He was born Aug. 6, 1919, in Washington County, Kan. In 1934, he moved with his family to the Nebraska Sandhills.

He began his love for rodeo at age eight by performing trick riding at local rodeos. He was drafted into the Army in 1942 and served at Fort Riley, Kan., and Fort Robinson, Neb., where he trained horses for the Cavalry during World War II. While serving in the Army he continued his love for rodeo by competing in the rodeo circuit on the weekends. In 1945 he won the World's Champion Buffalo Riding in Belle Fourche, S.D. He won the Amateur Bronc
Riding at the Cheyenne Frontier Days Rodeo in Cheyenne, Wyo. During his rodeo career he won many all-around
championships as he rode saddle broncs, competed in steer wrestling, calf roping and in later years, steer roping. In
1963 he won the National Finals Steer Roping Average in Pawhuska, Okla. He invested his rodeo winnings in livestock tobegin his successful ranching career, which always came first before rodeo.

He was a member of the Cowboy's Turtle Association, the predecessor of the RCA, and carried gold card #25 of the
Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association. He is also a charter member of the Nebraska Sandhills Cowboy Hall of Fame, a sixty-year member of the American Legion, very active in the Nebraska High School Rodeo Association and a faithful member of the United Church of Christ of Thedford, Neb.

A friend of all and a hero of many, his words of wisdom were cherished by all who knew his humor, his integrity and his encouraging spirit.

Survivors include his loving wife, Shirley; children, Linda (Eric) Carlson of Mesa, Ariz.; Joe (Kathy) of North Platte; step sons, Larry Moran of Arnold, and Terry Moran of Amherst; eight granddaughters and thirteen great grandchildren; one brother, Noah; and one sister, Janet Haynes.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Olen and Iva Troxel Nutter; one sister, Opal Fielder; and four brothers, Gerald, Maynard, Maurice, and Harley.
