Ulias married Elizabeth "Betty" VanBlaricum June 19, 1874, in Bartholomew Co. They moved right away to Iowa, and lived there for over 25 years, mostly in Appanoose Co. Ulias worked for a few years as a farmer, later a teamster, and then as a coal miner for several years. There was a large coal-mining industry in Appanoose Co. Ulias' parents, William and Anna, also went to Iowa for several years, but returned to Indiana by the late 1890s, as both died in Bartholomew Co. Ulias and Betty had returned to Indiana by 1910.
