STILSON - Pvt. William Olin Austin, 19, former resident of Stilson, was killed in action in Vietnam Sunday.

Pvt. Austin lived with Mr. and Mrs. W. Olin Griner in the Stilson Community for 10 years then moved to Ft. Bliss, Tex., where he had been making his home with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Jack L. Austin.

Funeral services and burial will be in Ft. Bliss.
Smith-Tillman Funeral Home in Statesboro is in charge of local arrangements.

At about 2pm on 13 oct 1968, PFC William Olen Austin was serving during a company sized reconnaissance in force operation. While moving through dense jungle terrain in Bien Hoa, South Vietnam, the point element was suddenly engaged by a large concealed enemy force utilizing claymore mines and automatic weapons fire.

In the initial moments of contact, the lead element sustained several casualties and was cut off from the main body of the unit. The unit engaged in a firefight with a hostile force and he was mortally wounded.

At this time, was fatally injured by a hostile round. He was killed by small arms fire, KIA On combat patrol.

His body was recovered.
