By the death of James White of Manlius (Illinois). We are again reminded that the old settlers of Bureau county are rapidly passing away. Mr. White has been a resident in Manlius Township 19 years, and a resident of Bureau county 20 years; having united with the United Brethern church in 1859, and lived a Christian life up to the day of his death which occurred on Wednesday, the 23rd day of December (1874). James White was born in Harrison county, Ohio in the year (November 27) 1803, and lived there until the spring of 1855, when he came to Bureau county, and bought a farm on Pleasant ridge in Manlius township. In the spring of 1856, he moved on his farm where he lived until the day of his death; aged 71 years and 26 days old.

After a short service at the house, by Rev. J. W. Burd, the friends were permitted to pass by and look for the last time upon the remains of the departed father and brother in the church. Then they repaired to the Baptist cemetery where the last sad rites were performed. Father White leaves a widow and eight children and a large circle of friends to mourn their loss.

His sickness was pleurisy. He was stricken down on Saturday the 20th about 9 o'clock and being speechless, he had not the pleasure of talking to his children and friends, but lay and slept his life away, without any pain visible to his friends. He lay from Saturday until Wednesday at 3 o'clock p.m. when he passed over the Jordan of death.

His funeral sermon was preached in the Manlius chapel, on Sunday the 27th at ll a.m. to a large concourse of people and sympathizing friends, by Rev. Mr. Burd. Text was: 2 Cor. 5-1.
