ALTA SUMNER, 93, of Ponca City, Oklahoma, passed away Monday night, December 17, 2012 at Shawn Manor Nursing Home in Ponca City.

Born December 6, 1919 in Burden, Kansas, she was the daughter of Ed and Ardena (Cheever) Lawrence. She was raised and educated in rural Burden.

Alta was united in marriage to Howard Sumner on September 28, 1938 in Burden, Kansas. Howard and Alta began farming in 1946 after Howard returned home from the service. They farmed from 1946 to 1953. In 1953, the couple sold the farm and went to Friends Bible College in Haviland, Kansas. They were dorm parents of the boy's dorm during this time.

Howard and Alta served as pastors from 1954 to 1985. They pastored at Stafford Friends Church in 1954. From 1955 to 1960, they were at Lone Star Friends Church, and from 1960-1962 they served at Bolton Friends Church. In 1963, they served at Riverton Friends Church until 1969. They were at Fowler Friends Church from 1970 to 1974, and at Cherokee Friends Church from 1975 to 1979. In 1980, they served Arkansas City Friends Church and pastored there until 1985. They also filled in for one year at the Mount Zion Friends Church.

The next 12 years, the couple managed the Sunflower Apartments in Arkansas City, Winfield and Udall. They spent a great deal of time counseling people who lived in the apartments and performing wedding and funerals. The couple moved to Ponca City in 2000 to be near family. Mr. Sumner preceded Alta in death on September 28, 2004.

Alta remained a member of the Arkansas City Friends Church. She loved to sew and embroider. She was a great cook and enjoyed making cookies.

Her family includes: Her son: Donald Ray Sumner and wife, Sherrie of Chandler, OK; Her daughter: Donna Lamm and husband, Larry of Ponca City, OK; Her grandchildren: Daniel Bayha of Ponca City; and Kimberly Donnell of Piedmont; Her great grandchildren: Skyler Donnell and Holden and Seth Bayha; Her 10 step grandchildren; 7 step great grandchildren; 1 step great-great grandchild; and A number of nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents and husband, Alta was preceded in death by her son, Norman Sumner, her granddaughter, Lisa Hancock, her brothers, Bob, Kenneth and Lloyd Lawrence and her sister, Ruth Lanier.

Funeral Services will be held on Thursday, December 20, 2012 at 2:00 P.M. at Miles Funeral Service in Winfield, Kansas. Interment will follow at Mt. Vernon Cemetery, northeast of Burden, Kansas.
