Captain John Jefferson Dougherty, of 1020 Grayson Street, San Antonio Texas, son of Lt. Gov. John S. Dougherty (Illinois), died in Eureka Springs, Arkansas.
Born in Jonesboro, Union county Illinois, he was appointed to West Point Military Academy in 1868 and graduated in 1872.
He was appointed lieutenant of the 11th Infantry and in 1880, to first Lt., then in 1890 to Captain.

He left his wife, a daughter, step-son; Captain H. I. Stewart, and brother, George M. Dougherty of Cairo, IL.

Married divorcee Helen Augusta (Hicks) Stewart in San Antonio, Texas April 20, 1892
After Helen divorced her husband, Irenius Dow Stewart, and married John, she changed her children's surname to Dougherty.
