Benjamin was born in Montreal, Canada in 1839. He enlisted in the United States Army on March 14, 1857 and served in Company A of the 4th Cavalry until his final discharge on August 30,1873 with the rank of sergeant. He was a veteran of many important battles and campaigns in the Civil War.

He married Eudora Elmira Temple on June 7, 1865. They had three children: Mary Ellen Gibson(born September 3, 1867), Emma Eudora Gibson(born November 21, 1869), and John Benjamin Fabre( born October 10, 1877).

He died July 16, 1887 in San Antonio, Texas at the age of 48. He is buried in the San Antonio National Cemetery.
*At some point between his initial interment and the creation of his current headstone, there were transcription errors in the cemetery's records resulting in the headstone showing his name as Fabie. I discovered this in my research and have gotten the cemetery to correct his information in the online database, but the headstone is not able to be corrected at this time.*

His eldest daughter Mary. Married to the brother of her sister emma's second husband.
