James O. Cross died Saturday, November 1, at the age of 83.

Mr. Cross had been in failing health recently and two weeks ago suffered a heart attack. He was taken to the home of his daughter, Mrs. C. L. Wigelsworth.

Mr. Cross spent most of his entire life in Leavenworth and Jefferson counties. He was born at Rock Island, Ill., May 22, 1869, a son of John and Elizabeth Van Druff Cross. The family moved to McLouth when Mr. Cross was a small boy. He engaged in farming and more than 50 years ago came to Leavenworth where he became a member of the firm of Bowman and Cross, dealers in musical instruments. He retired more than 20 years ago.

At McLouth 59 years ago Mr. Cross and Miss Minnie Bowman were married. Mrs. Cross died September 27, 1946. Mr. Cross was a member of the McLouth Church of the Brethren.

Mr. Cross is survived by six daughters, other than Mrs. Wigelsworth, at whose home he died. They are Mrs. Edward Ringel, 801 Kansas Ave., Mrs. Anna Klep, 610-1/2 Cherokee; Mrs. Alpha Esser and Mrs. John Chain, Blackwater, Mo., Mrs. Pauline Hartel and Mrs. Mary Stewart, Clinton, Mo.; one son, John Cross, 1095 South Broadway and a sister, Mrs. Eva Westfall, Yuma, Ariz. There are nine grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
