Battiato's family said he became a firefighter and paramedic 20 years ago out of a desire to help others. He was also devoted to his children, who range in age from 5 months to 15. He spent a lot of time encouraging his children at school and in sports, his family said.
Died in a plane crash en route to Childrens Memorial Hospital in Chicago, IL.
He had two full-time jobs, one with the South Chicago Heights Fire Department, the other with Air Angels.
His family includes six children, ages 15 to five month, as well as many relatives, who are remembering him as a hero.
