Age 31, was a registered nurse who perished along with two colleagues and a child on the Air Angels flight in Aurora

From Chicago was one of four people who died when an Air Angels medical helicopter crashed around midnight Wednesday in Aurora after clipping equipment for a radio tower.

The crushing loss was tinged with irony, they said, because Mann, who was a registered nurse, had scheduled an interview Thursday for a job at Evanston Hospital, a career move prompted in part by other recent accidents involving emergency medical flights. He had decided it was time to look for a safer job.

Mann's father called him "the finest man you'd ever want to meet in the world."

His mother, Arlette, said, "This is like a dream child. I have three exceptional children. He was my only son, just the light of my life."

An honor student at Holy Cross High School, has family repeatedly described examples of both humility and heroism. From the academic awards in high school that he shrugged off as no big deal, to the lives he saved working as an emergency medical technician.

His father told of an emergency tracheotomy he performed in an ambulance to save the life of a man who was stranded at a train crossing.

Mann fell in love with flying at age 12 when his parents arranged a helicopter ride, they said. He was adventurous, loved skydiving, and had lived around the country, working as an EMT in Houston and Los Angeles before returning home.
