Betty Utley St. John, a writer, artist, and designer for over fifty years, died Friday, September 19, 2008, in Silver Spring, MD. She was 88.
Betty grew up in New Windsor where she graduated from Mt. St. Mary's Academy. She attended Skidmore College, then moved to Forest Hills, NY, where she was married in April 1942.
She wrote a book, "Excess Baggage, Adventures of an Army Wife", that was published by Hastings House in 1943. She illustrated a second book for Hastings House, "Angel of the Navy". Betty was an artist for many years and designed jewelry, cookware, tableware, porcelain, and other items for major international manufacturers, including Anchor Hocking, Cartier, Rochard, and others. She retired in 2000 at the age of 80.
She is the daughter of the late Lewis S. Utley and Elizabeth (Sjoholm) Utley, and sister of the late First Lieutenant Lewis Henry Utley and George Dexter Utley II.
She is survived by her children, Bruce St. John and Donna Keller; daughter-in-law, Chun Hui St. John; grandchildren, Jacqueline Khelawan and Andrew Fritz; nieces and nephews: Elaine, George, Susan, Ann, and John; sister-in-law, Elaine Utley, and cousins, Lewis Utley Jordan and Judy Mirczak.
Services were held on Wednesday, September 24, in Maryland. She has returned to New Windsor where she was interred with her parents in Woodlawn Cemetery.
