Eugene Lee Lewis, age 88, died at the James H. Quillen Veterans Affairs Medical Center on Wednesday, October 15, 2008.
Mr. Lewis was born in Relief, NC, but lived most of his life in Unicoi County.
Eugene was the son of the late E. L. and Etta Griffith Lewis. Mr. Lewis was formerly employed by Hughes Buick Dealership in Erwin and retired as a conductor from Clinchfield Railroad in 1986. Eugene was a member of Love Chapel Christian Church, Erwin, TN. He was a U. S. Army veteran of WWII serving in Germany. Eugene loved the outdoors and especially enjoyed working with flowers and shrubs. He was a unique man who loved his family and will be greatly missed.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a grandson, Kelley Lewis, two sisters, Edith Lewis and Thelma H. Riley, five brothers, Loda, Roy, Charles, Ed, and Jack as well as two brothers-in-law, Reid Erwin and Arthur Erwin, Jr.
Eugene is survived by his wife of 69 years, Veta M. Erwin Lewis; Daughter, Jody King and husband, Alvin; Sons, Larry Lewis and wife Joyce, Ronnie Lewis and wife Barbara; Grandchildren, Melissa Griffith, Leeann Hensley, Leslee Collins, Katie Lewis, Lance Lewis and Lynnsey Lewis; Great grandchildren, Neelee Griffith, Allee Griffith, Hunter Hensley, Anniston Hensley and Destiny Collins; Sisters-in-law, Gladys Erwin, Martha Erwin and Gladys Lewis. All of Eugene's survivors are from Erwin, except his sister-in-law, Gladys Lewis who is from San Diego, CA. Eugene also leaves behind a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Funeral services for Mr. Lewis will be Friday, October 17, 2008, at the chapel of Valley Funeral Home. Ministers Robert Bess and Bruce Shawver will officiate. Music will be provided by Alvin King, Melissa, Neelee, and Allee Griffith. The family will receive friends from six o'clock until eight o'clock Friday, October 17, 2008. A graveside service will be held on Saturday, October 18, 2008, at eleven o'clock at Evergreen Cemetery, Erwin, TN. Everyone wishing to attend should meet at the cemetery by 10:50 a.m. on Saturday. Pallbearers will be Lance Lewis, Travis Griffith, John Hensley, Daniel Collins, and Aaron Riddle. Honorary pallbearers will be Wayne Love and Bill Fain.
