Alice Christine Ater, 87, of Frankfort, died Wednesday, January 19, 2000, at Adena Regional Medical Center following a lengthy illness. She had been a resident of Westmoreland Place for the past year. Christine was born August 4, 1912, to Wright Porter and Elizabeth (Bess) Caroline Haynes Maddux.

She was a 1929 graduate of Frankfort High School where she was a member of the championship girls' basketball team. She was a lifetime member of the Frankfort United Methodist Church where she was active as a choir member, Sunday School teacher, youth leader, and member of the United Methodist Women. Other activities included Child Evangelism Fellowship and the Auxiliary of Gideons International. Christine was preceded in death by her parents; her infant sister, Roberta; her stepmother, Vera Hartsook Maddux; her husband of 62 years, Howard C. Ater; and her daughter, Sarah Christine Ater Loughran.

She is survived by her daughter, Dr. Elizabeth Carolyn Ater, Lubbock, Texas; a son and daughter-in-law, Dr. David H. and Shirlee Ater, Chillicothe; son-in-law, Dr. E. Dan Loughran, Albuquerque, New Mexico; four grandchildren, Lori Christina Ater Coppel and her husband, Paul, of Gahanna, Ohio, Nancy Carolyn Loughran, Los Angeles, California, Michael Maddux Ater and his wife, Jennifer, Chillicothe, and Glenn Howard Loughran, Santa Fe, New Mexico; six great-grandchildren, Stephen Paul, John David, Kevin Standish, and Christina Loren Coppel and Autumn Christine and Ryan Michael Wathen.

Services were entrusted to Fisher-Anderson-Ebright Funeral Home of Frankfort, Ohio.
