John Donahue enlisted in the Marine Corps and served with Dog Company (Weapons), 24th Marines, in the battle of Namur. He was reassigned to Able Company when the weapons company was disbanded. Donahue served in the campaigns on Saipan and Tinian, where his grinning face appeared in a photograph of the 50 survivors of that second campaign. He went on to fight on Iwo Jima, and was mustered out with the rest of the 4th Division in 1945.
