John "JJ" Franey enlisted in the US Marine Corps in 1942. He received basic training on Parris Island, additional training at Camp Lejeune, and was incorporated into Able Company, 24th Marines at Camp Pendleton, California. "JJ" was a member of the weapons platoon of that company, and served as a mortarman. He was wounded during the battle of Saipan, which ended his active duty career.

He returned to Trenton, where he married, but had no children. Something of a movie buff, he enjoyed video work and performing film transfers with "J&M Video" - for John and Marilyn, a "terrific lady" he was seeing a few years before his death in 1996.
