4G GRANDSON OF REVOLUTIONARY WAR CAPTAIN JOHN GEORGE OVERMIRE

Obituary:

Mr. DeVon Loyd Overmyer, 90, of Kewanna, passed away at 2:11 p.m on Tuesday, December 3rd, at the home of his daughter and son-in-law, Jane and Tom Johnson. On April 30, 1923, DeVon was born near Lake Bruce to Lloyd and Nora Woodcox Overmyer. Growing up as the second oldest of the Overmyer kids, Devon was always there to help his brothers and sisters. As a youngster he became acquainted with Al Capone. The Bruce Lake Resort was a place to relax and have fun. This attracted many Chicagoans, among them was Capone. The Overmyer family allowed Capone to park his car in their garage. With great Indian pride, DeVon graduated with his class from Kewanna High School in 1942. He continued his education at North Central College of Naperville, Illinois, from 1942 through 1944. He earned his Bachelor of Arts Degree in 1972 from Monroe College. DeVon and Lucille I. Peters were married on April 20, 1946, at Pleasant Hill United Methodist Church in Lake Bruce. Their union of 55 years produced a beautiful daughter and a handsome son. Over the years two more generations were added to the family tree. DeVon developed a strong work ethic as a young man growing up as the second oldest during the Depression years. He was passionate about farming, but also during his younger years worked at Armours Dairy in Rochester, State Highway garage and Pulaski Memorial Hospital, both of Winamac. For many years he ran an Automotive Garage from his home near Lake Bruce. Devon was a 60-year member of the Masonic Lodge #79 Rochester, serving as past Worshipful Master at the Kewanna Masonic Lodge, member of the Order of Eastern Star Royal Center Chapter for over 55 years. He also was a member of the Scottish Rite, York Rite, Shriner and the United Methodist Church of Kewanna. Paramount in DeVon's life is his loving family. He was the proud patriarch overseeing 4 generations. Remembered as a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, DeVon was a role model and provided a positive influence on anyone who met him. He would go out of his way to help everyone around him. He was loved by all who knew him. Left to cherish DeVon's memory are: Barbara "Jane" Johnson and husband Thomas of Kewanna and their daughter Karrie Chantel (Johnson) Goelz and husband Justin; his son: DeVon Overmyer Jr. and wife Maria of Ridge Manor, Florida , and their daughter Desiree (Foci) McCune and husband David and their daughter, Cecilia McCune; 2 brothers: Rev. Kenneth Overmyer and wife Anna of Middlebury and Lawrence Overmyer and wife Jayne of Kewanna and several nieces and nephews. Preceding DeVon in death are his parents, his wife Lucille on July 14, 2001, a grandson: Claudio Foci; two brothers: Rev. C. Samuel Overmyer and Donald Overmyer; and 3 sisters and 1 brother in infancy. A celebration of the life of Mr. DeVon Overmyer will be at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, December 7 in the Good Family Funeral Home, 1200 W. 18th St., Rochester with Pastor Todd Wilson officiating. Friends may visit with the family from 10-1 on Saturday in the funeral home. A Masonic Service will be a 12:45 pm. Interment will be in the Bruce Lake Cemetery.
