DEATH TAKES MRS. POTTER AT AGE OF 94
Widow of First Mayor of Kalamazoo Noted for Her Philanthropy.
Mrs. Charity Purdy Potter, who had been gradually falling for several days, died at. 1:30 o'clock this morning at her home, 718 West South street. Several hours before the end came Mrs. Potter fell into a sleep from which she did of awaken and she passed away without suffering.
Mrs. Potter's death ends a long and useful life—one marked throughout by and devotion to her family, frequent acts of practical charity and comfort to those in need and distress, and an active interest in the religious organization of which for sixty years she was member.
Married When 19
Mrs. Potter was born March 9, 1826 in Romulus. N. Y., the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Abraham Letts. When she was nine years of age the family came to Michigan settling near Homer. Mr. Letts afterwards established a hardware store in Homer, and here in course of time Allen Potter was employed. Later the family moved to Lockport, N. Y., and there the couple were married. The young husband being 24 and the bride 19 years of age. Mr. Potter had embellished himself in business in Kalamazoo, and it was to this village they came make their home in 1845, and this has since been continuously the family residing place.
To Mr. and Mrs. Potter three children were born, Mrs. May Knight and Mrs. Lillie Gardener, both of whom survive her, and a son, Allen Potter. Jr., who died in young manhood. Mr. Potter passed away 35 years ago. There are several grandchildren. They being. Clare C. Burleigh, Alien W. Gardener, Major C. A. Gardener, Mrs. Edward M. Sergeant, Potter Knight, Carlton Knight, Mrs. Winifred Knight and Allen Potter, III, also a number of great grandchildren.
Last Survivor of Church
Mrs. Potter was the last surviving charter member of the First Unitarian Church, which was organized in 1856. During the existence of the church society, and, later when it became the People’s church, Mrs. Potter was closely identified with all its interests. For many years she taught a class in the Sunday school, and those boys and girl of 50 years ago have always. Remembered the influence for good she instilled into their lives.
In the early 80s, Mr. Potter was elected to represent the fourth congregational district at Washington. Mrs. Potter entered upon the social duties the capitol city with the same unassuming grace that marked her social obligations at home. During the time she was in Washington she met all the prominent men of that day, and became the warm friend of the society leaders of the city, and these friendships continued throughout her life. It was her husband's honor to be chosen as the first mayor of Kalamazoo when this was made a city. On the 25th anniversary of this event, Mrs. Potter was chosen by popular vote, the queen of the magnificent celebration in commemoration of the quartet century of cityhood
Live Solely For Loved Ones
Mrs. Potter in all her active life was wholly unostentatious. The greater number of her charities were unknown even to the members of her family. She often said that she lived solely for her loved ones, and those who knew her best declare that these included everyone who ever met her, for to know Mrs. Potter was to love her. She delighted to being surrounded by the members of her family—her daughters and her grandchildren, whose visits to her were frequent.
September 13, 1920, Mrs. Potter observed the 75th anniversary of her marriage. The event was made the occasion of a large family gathering to which her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren came to pay their respects.
