Charles Stafford joined the Marine Corps in March, 1943. He trained at Camp Elliot and joined Able Company, 24th Marines at Camp Pendleton. Stafford was an assistant gunner on a .30 caliber MG team.

PFC Stafford was wounded on Saipan, when a Japanese explosive bullet hit his upper arm, tearing the bone away. The wound was so serious that Stafford was returned to the States for treatment, where surgeons replaced the missing bone matter, saving his arm.

Charles Stafford died in 1998.
