From The Shippensburg Chronicle of Thursday, February 27, 1902:
Mrs. Maria Gelwicks.
Three weeks ago Mrs Maria Gelwicks, widow of George Gelwicks, who made her home principally with her son, Benjamin F Gelwicks, three miles southwest of Shippensburg, was stricken with paralysis. She never fully recovered consciousness but lay in a half-stupor until last Friday morning, February 21, very early, when her spirit gently passed on into the unseen world. Her one son and two daughters, Mrs D S Shulenberger of Shippensburg and Mrs David Burkholder of McKinney were with her during her last hours and ministered tenderly to her wants.
Mrs Gelwicks had been a lifelong member of Memorial Lutheran church and it was her delight to be in her place in God's house. Of a cheerful disposition, her children counted it a joy to have her with them. One could scarcely believe from her light and easy step that she had long attained more than three-score and ten, but she had reached seventy-seven years. Two brothers, John McKelvey of Chambersburg and William of near Baltimore survive her. Her husband died ten years ago.
Her funeral was held on Monday last at 10:00. Mr and Mrs John Barr and Mrs George V Johnston sang "My days are gliding swifly by", "Safe in the arms of Jesus", and "Asleep in Jesus", and her pastor spoke on the subject of the Christian's standpoint in view of death. Officers of Memorial congregation bore her body to its last resting place in Spring Hill cemetery.
She filled life's relationships of wife, mother, neighbor, friend and above all, Christian, so that now she will be missed when her seat is empty.
