Merle was the fourth of ten children born to Frank and Bertha (Strand) Anderson of rural Ellendale, N.D. He worked on the family farm until 1940, when he relocated to Battle Creek, Michigan, to marry Gladys Nelson, formerly of Frederick, S. D. HIs siblings were: Francis, Paul, Harvey, Floyd, Dorothy, Donald, Lynn, Gordon, and Howard. He served as a Sergeant in the Army Air Corp as a ring gunner on a B-29. Following his discharge, Merle returned to Battle Creek and worked for Michigan Carlton, Eaton Valve Plant and Columbia Plumbing and Heating. He retired from the Kellogg Company in 1976 with 25 years of service.
Merle ministered through music to local nursing homes and was a certified lay leader of the United Methodist Church. He was a faithful member of Birchwood Methodist Church until 1988, when he moved to the Grand Haven/Spring Lake area near his daughter.
Merle and Gladys were the parents of two daughters, Gloria, who died shortly after birth, and Kay. Merle, Gladys, and Kay made their home in the Battle Creek area for several decades. Gladys died in 1979. Merle and Gladys were the grandparents of Brian and Susan Howell and Tammy and Rod McPeak.
