MILDRED VIOLET "MICKEY" HAMPTON
Mildred Violet 'Mickey' Hampton, 89, of Morgan Park, left this life on July 1, 2004, in the Franciscan Health Care Center. She was born on February 27, 1915 to Everett and Myrtle (Fadden) Baker, near Portage LaPrairie, Manitoba, Canada. In 1920 her family immigrated to Proctor where her grandparents were living. Since then she has been a continual resident of Duluth. Mickey married Don Hampton on December 3, 1932 at the Central Avenue United Methodist Church. Don passed away February 5, 1959. After the death of Don, Mickey graduated from the Duluth School of Beauty. From then until her retirement she worked in the Morgan Park Beauty Shop, ending her career as owner and manager. Mickey was a friend to all her customers, frequently charging little if anything for those who needed help. After her retirement, Mickey was deeply involved in activities at the Good Fellowship Club in Morgan Park. During this time she has served as coordinator for Friendship Games with Canada, and was president, vice-president and interim treasurer. She also sang with a senior's group called the Blue and Gold Notes. Mickey's calling in life was her devotion to others. Her generosity, kindness, fun-loving ways and quiet wisdom attracted people to her. A skilled card player, she excelled in many games, but was particularly fond of cribbage. She had a very special way with her grandchildren, treating each as a unique individual. 'Gram' was first rate in the eyes of all her grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her parents; five brothers and sisters; and her husband, Don. Surviving are her sons, Don (Patricia) of Spokane, Wash., and Robert (Mary) of Duluth; five grandchildren, Kathy (Steve) Nowland of Spokane, Mary (Dan) Mahoney of Salem, Mass., Bob (Jane) Hampton of St. Louis Park, Judy (Tracey) Bolen and Jim Hampton of Duluth; seven great-grandchildren, Anna Nowland, Selina and Alyssa Hampton, Chad, Cory and Cassie Bolen and Cody Hampton; a brother, Chester (Ramona) Baker of Duluth; and a sister, Mae Pelland of Sylmar, Calif.; and many nieces and nephews. Mickey's family would like to thank the staff at the Franciscan Health Care Center for their care and kindness. VISITATION: 5 to 7 p.m. Monday in Bell Brothers Funeral Home and from 10 until the 11 a.m. service Tuesday in United Protestant Church in Morgan Park. Burial will be in Oneota Cemetery. (Published in the Duluth News Tribune from 7/3/2004 - 7/4/2004.)
