E.P. GREER, FORMER EDITOR OF THE COURIER, IS DEAD; HIS DEATH CAME SUNDAY ON SHIP IN PACIFIC

Edwin P. Greer, died suddenly Sunday on the steamship City of Los Angeles en route to Honolulu. The message was received at three o'clock this afternoon by Mrs. Greer, from the steamship company's office in Los Angeles, Another message bearing the same news was received by Milton A. Bangs, from relatives in Burbank, California.
Mr. Greer left Winfield on November 4th for Honolulu, where he expected to spend the winter, He expected to visit his brother, Bert, and relatives at Burbank, near Los Angeles. However, en route to California he contracted a severe cold which settled on his lungs, and from Los Angeles he was moved to Burbank, where he was tenderly cared for at the home of his brother, Bert Greer. He was not able to make the boat he had planned to sail on but he improved and took a later boat.
Death came suddenly, as the message announces.
Mr. Greer was for fifty years connected with The Courier, most of the time as editor and proprietor.
The community will be grieved and shocked at this announcement.

Body of E. P. Greer Will Arrive Back Home About Last Day of Year
MUST WAIT FOR A SHIP

The body of Edwin P. Greer, who died on board the steamer "City of Los Angeles" on Sunday December 7, is being carried to Honolulu, whither the ship was bound.
The "City of Los Angeles" will sail from Honolulu on December 20, arriving in Los Angeles December 26. As near as can be figured the date of the arrival of Mr. Greer's body in Winfield will be somewhere near the 29th of December. No additional details of his death are known but, it is supposed that bronchitis from which he long had suffered complicated with heart trouble caused the end to come suddenly.
Funeral arrangements will be announced later.
Today many expressions of sorrow were heard on the street at the announcement of the death of one of Winfield's early settlers and one of the town's most prominent citizens. For fifty years Mr. Greer was connected with the Courier and for forty years its editor.
His life was spent largely in Winfield where he was prominent in business and politic, well known for his ability in both lines.
Around the Courier office, the force which had been employed by him were saddened by the news of his death. They recounted many instances of his kindness to them and mourned that he should be stricken far from home.
Edwin Patterson Greer, was born in Leavenworth, Kansas Sept 13, 1857. With his parents Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Greer, he came to Cowley County in 1871. Mr and Mrs. Greer settled with their family on a claim southwest of Winfield.
In the spring of 1874, E.P. Greer, a seventeen year old boy began work as an apprentice on the Winfield Courier and his connection with the paper lasted for 50 years. For forty years he was its editor and publisher, building the business from small beginnings into a large daily newspaper and job plant.
Three brothers and two sisters survive.
They are: Bert R. Greer, Ashland, Oregon; Charles Greer, San Francisco; Frank H. Greer, Tulsa; Mrs. Mary Greer Conklin, Washington, D.C.; Miss Nora Greer, Burbank, Calif.
Mr. Greer was married to Miss Lizzie Kinne, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. E.P. Kinne on October 30, 1878. Two children were born to them - Edwin Jr. and Grace, now the wife of M. A. Bangs of this city.
Mr. Greer was very fond of his grand children, Elizabeth and Billie Greer and Tom and Charlotte Bangs. (Winfield Daily Courier - Tuesday, December 9, 1924)

GREER FUNERAL WILL BE HELD ON TUESDAY
Body of E. P. Greer is Now En route From Los Angeles

The funeral services for the late Edwin P. Greer, former editor of the Winfield Daily Courier will be held at the First Presbyterian church on Tuesday afternoon, December 30, at three o'clock. Dr. W. C. Templeton, pastor of the First Presbyterian church will be in charge of the service. Burial will be made in Union cemetery.
The body arrived at Los Angeles aboard the steamer City of Los Angeles from Honolulu on Friday and is now on the California Limited en route to Winfield. Miss Eleanor Greer, a sister, who lives in Burbank, California, will accompany the body to Winfield, and Mr. and Mrs. M.A. Bangs will meet the funeral party.
