Services will be held at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday in the Chapel of Macy & Son Funeral Directors for Rex Haynie, longtime McMinnville civic and business leader who died June 28, 1981, in McMinnville at the age of 69. Interment will be in the Pilot Butte Cemetery in Bend.

A native of Gaston, he was born April 24, 1912, son of Walter E. and Adella Haynie. He was reared and educated in Bend, where he was graduated from high School.

He joined the J.C. Penney Co. in 1931 and was with the company 37 years, including 14 years as manager of the McMinnville store.

He took early retirement from Penney’s to open the Red Lion Motel in Bend, but returned to McMinnville in 1969 because of an illness.

Mr. Haynie and Wilma McCune were married in 1934. Before moving to McMinnville, he was with Penney’s in Astoria, Medford and Snohomish, Wash. During World War II, Mr. Haynie served in the Navy.

In all of the cities in which he lived, Mr. Haynie was active in civic affairs. Before moving to McMinnville, he had been president of the Jaycees, the Lions and Kiwanis clubs and Chamber of Commerce in some of the cities in which he lived.

In McMinnville, he served on the city Budget Committee, was a member of the School Board, served as chairman of the United Good Neighbors and the Turkey Rama celebration and was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Elks Lodge 1283, American Legion, Knights of Pythias and Michelbook Country Club. In 1967, he was named winner of the McMinnville Jaycees First Citizen Award.

Survivors include his wife, Wilma Haynie of McMinnville; two daughters, Sara Shreve of Portland and Lola Morrison of Salem; a sister, Clara Keller of Bend; and three grandchildren.
