Paul, Augustus Chouteau or Choteau, April 16, 1842 born at Albany, N. Y., son of Gabriel R. and Mary A. Whistler Paul; cadet in the Kentucky Military Institute; May 16, 1861 capt., Kentucky Mounted Infantry; Aug. 16, 1861 mo; Jan. 2, 1862 capt., Co. I, 23rd Ky. Infantry Rgt. Stone River, Tenn. June 1, 1863 capt., assistant adjutant general, volunteers; on staff of Generals H. Baxter, A. A. Humphrey and B. H. Pierce; participated in 26 battles and a large number of skirmishes; taken prison-er and confined in Southern prison for 11 months and one of the officers placed by the Confederates under the fire of Union guns at Charleston, S. C. March 13, 1865 brevet maj., volunteers for the Wil-derness, Va. and brevet ltcol., volunteers for Spotsylvania, Va. Sept. 19, 1865 mo; Jan. 21, 1866 married Josephine C. Bradshaw who died Nov. 5, 1885 at Washington, D. C. May 11, 1866 declined an appointment as 2ndlt., 12th U. S. Infantry Rgt. Jan. 23, 1869 2ndlt., 3rd U. S. Cavalry Rgt. served on the frontier participating in all the scouts and campaigns of 3rd U. S. Cavalry Rgt. after hostile Indians in New Mexico, Arizona, Wyoming, Montana, Utah and Dakota Territory including General Crook's 1876 campaign against Sioux and Cheyennes and was engaged in the capture of Crazy Horse Village, battles of the Rosebud and Slim Buttes; Dec. 20, 1872 1stlt. 1873 U. S. postmaster at the National Soldiers Home, Va. as of 1880 at Ft. D. A. Russell, Wyo. May 26, 1881 resigned; Sept. 19, 1904 buried in Hampton, Va.
