Based on enlistment his service included Siege of Corinth,MS(May 1862), battle of Iuka (Sep 19) and battle of Corinth (Oct 3-4). The Union was outnumbered more than 3 to 1 by attacking Confederate forces (approx 10,000) at Battle of Corinth. However the Union still held the hard won ground at the end of the day. The 17th pursued retreating forces to Ripley( Oct 4-13). Then assigned guard duty of Memphis & Charleston Railroad until Feb 2 1863. Operations against Ft Pemberton & Ft Greenwood(Mar – Apr 1863), moved to Louisiana and battles of Port Gibson, Raymond, Jackson, Champions's Hill, Big Black River, assault, siege and occupation of Vicksburg (Apr – Sep 1863) Battle of Chattanooga, Tunnel Hill and Missionary Ridge,TN (Oct – Nov 1863) garrison duty Huntsville,Ala until Jun 1864. Duty at Tilton,GA Jul – Oct 13 ).,
On Oct 13,1864, Tilton ,GA was attacked and the majority of the regiment captured. What was left of the regiment joined Sherman at Savannah,GA (Jan 1865).
