Bernelle Valmah Glawe, 83, of Elkader, died Sunday, October 19, 2008, at Central Hospital in Elkader, following a long illness. He was born on April 6, 1925, rural St. Olaf, Wagner Township, to Albert and Lucinda (Gottschalk) Glawe.

He was united in marriage to Wilma Scherf on December 14, 1953, at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Garnavillo. Seven children were born to this union. Bernelle and Wilma farmed during the early years of their marriage. He was a butter maker in St. Olaf for a time and later, a cheese maker for Swiss Valley in Luana for twenty three years. Burnelle retired in 1987. The couple moved to Elkader in 2000. Bernelle was an avid sports fan. He enjoyed fishing and bowling – he bowled a 300 at the Postville bowling alley. Spending time with family and friends is what Bernelle loved most.

Survivors include his wife, Wilma of Elkader; three sons, Steven Glawe of Elkader, Rick (Rowanne) Glawe of Cedar Rapids, Victor (Lori) Glawe of Des Moines; six grandchildren, Abby (Jeremiah) Tuttle, Erin Glawe, Rodney (Heidi) Glawe, Elizabeth Glawe, Andrea Glawe, Christopher Glawe; one great-grandchild, Marissa Glawe, daughter-in-law, Maureen Glawe of St. Olaf; two sisters, Betty Leuchtenmacher of Elkader, Bonnie Jeffery of Arlington, TX; numerous nieces, nephews and friends.

Bernelle was preceded in death by his parents; four children, Allen Glawe, Rodney Glawe, Carolyn Glawe, Judith Glawe; one grandson, Logan Glawe and eight siblings, Gladys Coobs, Harvey Glawe, Lloyd Glawe, Lucille O'Neal, Raymond Glawe, Darlene Glawe, Vera Palas and Verdine Glawe.
