James M. Cartmill was born in West Virginia; He left there after the Civil War, probably 1878, went into Missouri, then on to Oklahoma Territory, before 1885, where the family was shown at Deer Creek in 1900 census. In 1930, he was a widower, living in Edmond, and stated he was 84 yrs of age. He married Melvina Hatton 16 Sept. 1874 in W.VA.
Their children included: Charles, Maggie, Frank W, Oliver, Shelby, John H., Bertha M. and Mima. J.M. Cartmill, was in the Union 13th WV Infantry, Co. H, from Wayne Co. He enlisted at age 18, 26 Apr. 1864, and was discharged for disabiltiy at Louisville, KY in 1865.

The 13th Union Regiment, was organized at Point Pleasant WV, in Oct 1862. They were deployed in the Shenndoah region and fought in some hard places. The regiment lost 4 officers, 57 enlisted men killed, and one officer and 107 enlisted men were lost by disease, for a Total of 169. (History of 13th WV Inf).
