The son of Francis & Hannah Allison, in 1860 he was a teacher and farmer living in Mountjoy Township, Adams County. He stood 5' 10" tall and had black hair and brown eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he was drafted in Adams County October 16, 1862, mustered into federal service at Gettysburg November 10 as a musician with Co. F, 165th Pennsylvania Infantry (aka "Drafted Militia"), and honorably discharged with his company July 28, 1863. He also enlisted in Gettysburg March 6, 1865, mustered into federal service at Harrisburg March 13 as a private with the second organization of Co. G, 101st Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company June 25, 1865.

He married Mary Jane Pitzer and fathered Cora Belle (b. 04/02/67 - married Joseph Washington Witherow), Minnie M. (b. @1871), Henry A. "Harry" (b. @1875), and Annie. In 1890, he lived in Mountjoy Township, Adams County. His stated age at death calculates to a birth date of February 5, 1864.
