John was my wife's father, he was born in Winthrop MA and moved to Pennsylvania, met his wife during World War II and stayed in PA. I kidded him that his daughter Karen (my wife) was born in PA and moved to MA after meeting me and getting married - we swapped places.

Dr. John L. Kelly, 69, a Delaware County physician and psychiatrist, died Tuesday at Riddle Memorial Hospital in Media. He lived in Media.

Former president and executive director of the Delaware County Medical Society, Dr. Kelly was active in the field for more than 40 years.

Educated at Boston College and Hahnemann Medical College, he interned in Boston before World War II. He served in the Army Air Corps during the war. After the war, he practiced psychiatry in New Jersey and Pennsylvania. For the last 25 years, he maintained offices in Media.

He was a clinical professor of psychiatry at Hahnemann University Medical College and served on the staffs of the Riddle Memorial, Crozer-Chester, Taylor and Philadelphia Psychiatric hospitals.

Dr. Kelly, a life fellow of the American Psychiatric Association, established the electroencephalographic unit at Sacred Heart Hospital in Chester. He served on professional and civic committees, including the Pennsylvania delegation to the American Medical Association. He also served on the Pennsylvania Governor's Health Advisory Committee, the Delaware County Mental Health/Mental Retardation Board, and the Delaware County Authority.

Dr. Kelly was chairman of the board of K&M Broadcasting of Sterling, N.J., and the Men of Malvern.

Surviving are his wife, Mereda Talley Kelly; sons, Lt. Col. John L. and James T.; daughters, Karen Purple, Kathleen and Patricia; four grandchildren, and two sisters.

Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the Rigby Harting & Hagan Funeral Home, 15 E. Fourth St., Media. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10 a.m. Monday at Nativity Blessed Virgin Mary Church, Franklin and Monroe Streets, Media. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery.
