Canton Commercial Advertiser - September 14, 1876
The "King of Terrors" has been moving among us, and taking many of our neighbors and friends from us. Mr. Jared Abernathy was called by him. He had gone into the South woods to hunt and fish and recruit his health. On Monday of last week, when about thirty miles into the woods, he was taken ill, and began moving homeward, resting occasionally on the way. On Wednesday he felt somewhat better, and after resting at a place known as "Hunter's Lodge" the party continued their journey homeward. After proceeding a short distance he began feeling worse, and when about ten miles from Hunter's Lodge, he died. His remains were brought home on Friday night, and on Sunday morning his funeral took place from his former residence. Services and sermon by Rev. Mr. Crehoe of Canton.
