Cynthia was born in Kentucky the daughter of James M. Hale and Mary "Polly" Shepherd and the granddaughter of John and Tobithia (Mainard) Hale and Bryson and Elizabeth (Crager) Shepherd. Cynthia was the twin sister of Linzie Lane Hale. She married Roach Gayhard. Their children are; Virgie "Poppy" Gayhart. Cynthia, Roach and their daughter Poppy all drowned in the 1910 Licking River Flood.
