SHERIDAN - Maude J. (Lafland) Abbott, 71, died unexpectedly Feb. 17, 2005, at Houlton Regional Hospital. She was born Sept. 27, 1933, in Wrightville, the daughter of Philip M. and Hannah (Newbegin) Lafland. She attended Ashland schools and was a 1953 graduate of Ashland Community High School. Maude is survived by her husband of 51 years, Vinal E. Abbott of Sheridan; her mother, Hannah Carter of Westfield; four sisters, Betty Spooner and her husband, Ivan Jr. of North Anson, Annie York of Solon, Phyllis Cloukey and her husband, Rene Sr., of Sheridan, and Lillian Clark and her husband, Alfred Jr., of Belchertown, Mass.; one brother, Philip Lafland and his wife, Barbara, of Belchertown, Mass.; several nieces and nephews. She will also be missed by special friends, Alma Jones and Karen Boynton of Washington, Carolyn Jackson of Augusta, Dot McNaulty, and Jim and Lila Day of Presque Isle. She was predeceased by her father, Philip Lafland. Maude joined the Hayward-Frazier VFW Auxiliary No. 2599 of Presque Isle in 1977 and transferred to the VFW LeBlanc-Junkins Post 9699 of Ashland when it was established. She was a very active member, both locally and state-wide and held many offices and positions. Maude joined the Disabled American Veterans Auxiliary Unit No. 10 of Presque Isle in 1985. From 1986 to 2005 she served as treasurer and adjutant. Maude organized the Steven L. Porter Purple Heart Auxiliary No. 1626 in 1997, where she served as secretary-treasurer from 1997 to 2005. She was also a member of the Vietnam Vigil Committee of Lewiston. She was very devoted to the veterans and their families and for her dedicated work, she received many awards. Maude was also a member of the Ashland Area Senior Citizens, the AARP and the ACAP. Relatives and friends may call 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Sunday at the Advent Christian Church, 42 Exchange St., Ashland. A funeral service will be held at the church at 11 a.m. Monday with the Rev. Alan Chamberlin, pastor, officiating. Spring interment will be in the Maine Veterans Cemetery, Caribou. Those who wish may contribute in her memory to the Purple Heart Auxiliary, in care of Lila Day, 33 Caron St., Presque Isle, ME 04769. A service of Stimson-Ouellette Funeral Home, 114 Exchange St., Ashland.
