Avon Karyl Mason, 93, of Austin, died on Oct. 29, 2008 at St. Mark's Lutheran Home.

Avon was born June 15, 1915 in LeRoy to Frank and Beatrice (Sampson) Mason. They later moved to Red Wing, Minn., where he lived until joining the Civil Conservation Corps. when he was 16. After leaving the CCC, he moved to Austin where he met his wife, Gladys Olmstead. They were married on Feb. 6, 1938 in Osage, Iowa. Avon and Gladys were married for almost 63 years, until her death on Jan. 14, 2001. Avon and Gladys had five children. The couple enjoyed camping with their Airstream trailer and the many friends they met along the way. They were members of the Wally Byam Airstream Caravan and traveled the United States. They were also members of St. Olaf Lutheran Church for many years. In later years, Avon loved listening to music, going for rides, going out to eat and having his family around him. He worked for the George A. Hormel Co. for 30 years and he was a veteran of World War II.

Survivors include three children: Russell Mason, Austin, Karyl (Bob) Brabbit, Faribault, Kenneth (Phyllis) Mason, Hastings; five granddaughters; two great-granddaughters; two great-grandsons; nieces, nephews and cousins.
In addition to his wife, he is preceded in death by a son, Allen; daughter, Sandra; parents, Frank and Beatrice; one brother and two sisters.
Avon will be sadly missed by his family and friends.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 2, 2008 at Mayer Funeral Home with the Reverend Ron Barnett officiating. Friends may call from 5 to 7 p.m. on Saturday and one hour before the service at Mayer Funeral Home on Sunday. Interment will be in Oakwood Cemetery with military rites by American Legion Post No. 91.
