Guillermo Barriga, 87, died Friday, Jan. 4, 2002, at his daughter's home In Gettysburg. He was the husband of Virginia Hershey Barriga, who died in 1998.
Born in 1914 in Bogota, Colombia, he was the son of Luis Eduardo Barriga and Ada Casalini de Barriga.
He was a member of the founding class of the Colombian Naval Academy, from which he graduated in 1938. During World War II, he served as a commanding officer of Colombian Navy destroyers, and then completed training in 1947 as an electrical engineer. After the war, he served as the first Naval attaché to the Colombian Embassy in Washington, D.C., then retired from the Colombian Navy in 1951. He was awarded several medals by the Colombian government, including la Orden de la Democracia and the Naval Order of Admiral Padilla.
He had a temporary position teaching Spanish at Gettysburg College and went on to earn his master's degree at Middlebury College in Vermont in 1956, and his PhD from the University of Madrid in Spain in 1960. He wrote Los Dos Mundos del Quijote, which was published in 1981, and retired from Gettysburg College in 1982. He was a member of Cervantes Society of America, Association of Cervantes Scholars of Spain, and the Association of Retired Officers of the Armed Forces of Colombia.
He represented Colombia on its national soccer team at the Pan American games in 1938, and successfully coached the Gettysburg College soccer team in the 1950s and early 1960s. He was a member of Gettysburg Presbyterian Church for 50 years and became a United States citizen in 1975.
Surviving are three daughters, Barbara Rowe of Unionville, Antonia Mitman of Easton, and Harriet Marritz of Gettysburg; nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
The service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Gettysburg Presbyterian Church, 208 Baltimore St., Gettysburg, with his pastor, the Rev. Daniel T. Hans, officiating. Private burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the church Immediately following the service on Saturday.
Monahan Funeral Home, 125 Carlisle St., Gettysburg, is in charge of the arrangements.
Memorial contributions may be made to Gettysburg Presbyterian Church, or Hospice of the Good Shepherd.
